Sorprenderse, extranarse, es comenzar a entender. Es el deporte y el lujo especifico del intelectual. Por eso su gesto gremial consiste en mirar al mundo con los ojos dilatados por la extraneza. Todo en el mundo es extrano y es maravilloso para unas pupilas bien abiertas.

To be surprised, to wonder, is to begin to understand. This is the sport, the luxury, special to the intellectual man. The gesture characteristic of his tribe consists in looking at the world with eyes wide open in wonder. Everything in the world is strange and marvellous to well-open eyes.

　ものごとに驚き、不審を抱くことが理解への第一歩である。それは知的な人間に特有なスポーツであり、贅沢である。だからこそ、知性人に共通な態度は、驚きに瞠った目で世界を観るところにあるのである。しっかりと開かれた瞳にとっては、世の中のすべてが不思議であり、驚異である。
