「ユダヤ人の信仰を受け入れたキリスト教徒ー後にはイスラム教徒ーは、ユダヤ人が最初に神に愛されたという点に異常にこだわった。そのため、一神教文明のなかでは経験に基づく嫉妬が重要な心理的力学として作用し、集団のなかでは、反ユダヤ主義が最も根深い姿勢として確立されたのである。」

※existential envy を「経験に基づく嫉妬」と訳してしまうのでは、父の愛を巡って、弟が兄を、妹が姉を、妬みが嵩じて憎む、という人間的情念が伝わらないのではないか、と愚考します。せめて「存在論的嫉妬」「実存的嫉妬」がましでしょう。

そんな本音を書いていいのかい？と思いましたが、日本語版序文だから、書いたのかも知れません。恐らく、英語版は増刷にはならないでしょうからね。難解で売れないでしょうし。

なぜ、「他者」は「私」にとってリスペクトすべき存在なのか？／ Why should “others” be respected by “me”?

たとえ、どれほど愚かで、どれほど悪辣な他者であっても、実はその存在そのものが、自分を含む人間というものをより深く理解できる契機となり得る。少なくとも、かつそのかぎりにおいて、すべての他者は敬意を払うに足る存在と言える。

No matter how foolish or vicious others may be, their very existence can actually be an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of human beings, including ourselves. At the very least, and to that extent, all others are worthy of our respect.
